Why Is a mule always the offspring of a Male donkey and a female horse?

Wow, I always thought mules were sterile. Wrong; A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. (typically sterile) A Hinny or Jenny are the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey, usually smaller than mules. A donkey has 62 chromosomes whereas a horse has 64.
