When you install a umd to a psp memory stick, can you play the game without the umd?

I did the full package install of Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. I just want to know if I need the umd in the psp to play the game. My reason is so I know if I should buy a big memory stick and install all my games so I don't have to bring the umds.
